The Atheist Conundrum
I suppose I’m giving the ignorant masses too much credit by qualifying this as a ‘conundrum’ because there really isn’t anything complicated about the subject. But some may genuinely not know because they just never encountered or cared about the topic before.
What is atheism?
Atheism, as the definition goes, is a lack of belief in god or gods. I tend to take it one step further and make it a lack of belief in some ideological doctrine. To this end, I feel like political doctrines like communism (not in the theoretical sense, but in the way in which it has been applied in history) is akin to a religion, and therefore even if communists worship no deity, they still aren’t atheist. Technically, they are, but they don’t exemplifies what it means to be atheist.
Atheism is not a religion. Religions contains guidelines and tenets, rituals and/or ceremonies, rules, and more often than most, blind faith. Atheism provide no such things. Atheism will not tell you if you can drink alcohol, if you can or can’t marry this and that person, if you should dress this and that way, and so on. Atheism does not tell you how to live your life.
Just like a person who lacks sexual attraction in both men and women is an asexual, so is a person who lacks belief in a god or gods an atheist.
If you truly understood what atheism meant, you wouldn’t go around saying it’s a religion, just like you wouldn’t call people who don’t paint have a different painting style.
I would also like to add that atheist does not equal anti-theist, but they aren’t mutually exclusive. This should be a no-brainer as to why, but I’ll explain it anyway: a person who doesn’t enjoy football isn’t anti-football, he just doesn’t care about football. Doesn’t mean he opposes it.
